On a visit to Kabul on Wednesday, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad accused the United States of playing a ‘‘double game’’ in Afghanistan, according to an Afghan news website.
Asked to respond to U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates’s charge that Tehran is "playing a double game" by maintaining good ties with Kabul while supporting the Taliban, Ahmadinejad said, "I believe that they themselves...[who are now fighting the Taliban] are playing a double game."
The Iranian president added, "They themselves created terrorists and now they say that they fight terrorists." He said that the presence of nearly 120,000 foreign troops in Afghanistan will not result in peace and stability in the country.
Ahmadinejad noted that Tehran supports the Kabul government. He denied allegations that Iran helps anti-government militants in Afghanistan.
